Aubrey Louis Berry, a 23 year-old music promoter from Atlanta, Georgia pled not guilty to murder and assault charges for the shooting death of rapper “Dolla” yesterday at the Los Angeles Superior Court.
According to officials, the shooting occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. on May 18, 2009 in the valet parking area of the Beverly Center Shopping Mall in Los Angeles, California.
Police say, Berry was arrested just three hours later at the Los Angeles International Airport.
The 21-year-old rapper from Atlanta, whose real name is Roderick Anthony Burton II, had arrived in Los Angeles just hours before his death to work on his first album, reported the Los Angeles Times.
The rapper had recorded several singles and his first album was scheduled to be released in the summer on Jive Records.
Berry is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly firearm and one count of murder and could face life in prison.
Berry's lawyer Howard Price has stated that the shooting was in self-defense. The rapper’s family disputes this claim and has said that Dolla was unarmed at the time of the incident.
Two other "persons of interest" allegedly with Berry at the time of the shooting are being questioned according to TMZ.
Berry is due back in court for another hearing on Tuesday May 26, 2009. It is expected that Price will ask the Court to reduce the bail to be set at no more than one million dollars.
