Athletics sign Russ Springer, 1/29: The Oakland Athletics landed veteran setup man Russ Springer last Thursday. The former St. Louis righty signed a one-year deal which is expected to be worth about $3M. Springer has posted excellent ERAs for the past two seasons (2.32, 2.18). He will likely become the A’s 7th inning setup man, with either Brad Ziegler or Joey Devine taking on the 8th inning.
Giants sign Juan Uribe, 1/29: The San Francisco Giants have signed former White Sox infielder Juan Uribe to a minor league deal. Uribe has good power and his defense is underrated, but he’s likely to assume a utility role in San Francisco in 2009.
Rockies sign Josh Fogg to a minor league deal, 1/30: The Colorado Rockies have brought back starting pitcher Josh Fogg, this time on a minor league deal after Fogg’s awful 2008 season with Cincinnati. The Rockies hope Fogg can return to his 2007 form when he went 10-9 for the club en route to a World Series appearance.
Red Sox re-sign Jason Varitek, 1/30: The Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement with their captain, free agent catcher Jason Varitek on a one-year deal worth $5M – the deal also contains a $5M team option for 2010. Varitek really hurt himself by not accepting the Red Sox offer of arbitration – he clearly overvalued himself in this free agent market.
Cubs deal Michael Wuertz to A’s, 2/2: The Oakland A’s continued their busy offseason, acquiring reliever Michael Wuertz for two minor leaguers. Wuertz was out of options put has posted nice numbers as a member of the Cubs bullpen. He will probably work in middle relief for Oakland in 2009.
Red Sox sign Brad Wilkerson to minor league deal, 2/3: The Boston Red Sox added Brad Wilkerson to their outfield mix on Tuesday, signing former Blue Jay Brad Wilkerson to a minor league contract. The deal contains performance incentives that, if reached, could allow Wilkerson to earn up to $2.5M for the 2009 season. As it stands right now, Wilkerson is likely low on the Red Sox depth chart and could begin the season in Triple A Pawtucket.
Orioles sign Ty Wigginton, 2/3: The Baltimore Orioles added some power to their lineup Tuesday, signing veteran corner infielder Ty Wigginton to a two-year deal worth about $6M. Wigginton has been a consistent 20-homer threat since 2006 – he will likely occupy first base in Baltimore, replacing the departed Kevin Millar.
Rangers sign Eddie Guardado to a minor league contract, 2/3: Another reliever is off the market, with Eddie Guardado agreeing to a minor league deal with Texas. The veteran reliever pitched well for the Rangers in 2008 before struggling after being shipped to Minnesota in August. His deal could be worth up to $3M if incentives are reached.
Nationals sign Javier Valentin to a minor league deal, 2/3: Nationals GM Jim Bowden continues his fascination with ex-Reds players, signing catcher Javier Valentin to a minor league contract. The powerful Valentin only got 129 at-bats last season, and will compete with Wil Nieves for the Nationals backup catcher job.
