Major league baseball players endure the longest season of any major professional sport, but some still manage to find time to write.  Here’s a rundown of some of the best player and executive blogs from around the baseball world:

  • Curt Schilling – 38 Pitches: Schilling’s blog is featured on the WEEI radio station website (he also writes a column).  Never shy with his opinion, Schilling was born to blog.  He offers readers a look into his offseason life and comments frequently on Red Sox transactions, news, and general goings-on around major league baseball.

  • Andre Ethier – Dining With ‘Dre: Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier focuses less on baseball, and more on what’s really important – food.  Though he blogs regularly about his experiences in the postseason, Ethier primarily uses his blog to provide readers with in-depth reviews of Los Angeles area restaurants.

  • Paul DePodesta – It Might Be Dangerous…You Go First: Former Dodgers General Manager and current San Diego Padres front office assistant Paul DePodesta provides readers with a baseball executive’s perspective.  For any fan who wonders why their team didn’t sign a particular free agent, or make that steal of a trade, read this blog!  DePodesta gives excellent insight on what goes on behind the scenes with trades, free agency, arbitration, and the draft.

  • C.J. Nitkowski – CJ Baseball: C.J. Nitkowski last pitched in the major leagues in 2005, but he’s still an active player (as of 2008) in the Japanese Baseball League.  Nitkowski was one of the first athletes to have his own web page, and in many ways he anticipated the blogging phenomenon before it went mainstream.  His blog is now used to educate people on baseball in Japan, and his experiences as an American living in another country.

  • Curtis Granderson’s Blog: Though he only posts during the regular season, in my opinion Curtis Granderson does the most to engage with his readers than any other baseball blogger.  He updates regularly during the grind of the regular season, and often takes questions and answers frequently.  His posts are very well written and are generally light, informative, and entertaining.

  • On the Road with Pat Neshek: Minnesota Twins setup man Pat Neshek posts year-round on a variety of topics including his baseball life and his personal life.  Like Granderson, Neshek is also willing to engage his fans, and he does so by providing “live” chats via the message board on his website.  If you’re wondering about the status of Neshek’s injured right shoulder, read his blog!  He’s currently providing insight into his rehab program and timetable for return.

  • Kevin Slowey’s (offseason) Blog: Neshek’s Twins teammate Kevin Slowey blogs during the offseason on anything and everything he’s up to.  It’s a great place to read about Twins winter activities and to really get inside the head of a major leaguer when he has a lot of time on his hands!

  • Bengie Molina – Behind the Mask: San Francisco Giants catcher Bengie Molina blogs regularly during the regular season, and occasionally during the postseason (check it out now for a nice tribute to Bengie’s father).  He speaks in a conversational tone, and really takes the reader through the grind of being a starting catcher in the major leagues.

Those are just eight of what I’m sure are many great blogs maintained by people inside the game of baseball.  If you’re aware of any more, please use the comments section to let me know!
