Reach for the ring

On September 26, 2009 the Children’s Diabetes Foundation will host the High Hopes Carousel Ball. The event will take place at the Sheraton Denver Downtown at 1550 Court Place.

Proceeds from the Carousel Ball go to support the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. Barbara Davis and her husband, Marvin, upon learning that their daughter had type I diabetes established the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and Barbara Davis Center.  They hosted a fund raising ball that year and called it the Carousel Ball. When they moved to Hollywood, California, they began hosting the ball there. The Children’s Diabetes Foundation subsequently hosted a dinner in Denver entitled the High Hopes Dinner. This year the two names have been combined to create the High Hopes Carousel Ball. The new name comes with a new logo: the carousel of life with a child reaching for the brass ring.

“Bringing back the carousel will resonate with long-time Denver philanthropists and supporters,” said the foundation’s executive director, Chrissy Lerner. “And the carousel is appropriate. With each ball, we reach for the brass ring in our efforts to support the fight against childhood diabetes.”

George Eisenbarth, the director of the Barbara Davis Center included, “Without the Davis family’s support, the Barbara Davis Center would not be here. The ball has been helping to support us for the past 30 years.” He also mentioned that half of the money goes to support uninsured children to ensure that everyone has access to the clinical facilities of the center.

This year, the ball will feature Larry King as the Master of Ceremonies and performances by Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Earth Wind and Fire, and Shawn King. Additionally there will be a short ceremony honoring Arlene Hirschfeld, a long-time community volunteer and Children’s Diabetes Foundation Executive Board Member. There will also be a silent auction. Elway’s Cherry Creek is donating a Private Chef’s Dinner for 8 people. CBS Outdoor is donating billboard space for 1 month. AMC Entertainment is donating unlimited movies for 1 year for two people. The Oprah Winfrey Show is including 2 tickets to Oprah including 2 first class plane tickets on Northwest/Delta and 2 nights at the Marriott in Chicago. NY Fashion Week is donating the opportunity to accompany fashion editor Suzanne Brown to New York for at least 2 fashion shows, again, including 2 first class tickets on Northwest/Delta and 2 nights at the Marriot New York. Finally, there will be a live auction. The Jonas Brothers have donated 2 front row concert tickets along with an opportunity to meet and greet. Airline tickets for 2 are provided by American Airlines along with a 2 night stay at an appropriate Marriot. The Spa Connections has donated a 4-night stay for 2 at the Canyon Ranch (all inclusive) Spa in Tucson Arizona.
