There are plenty of new ideas and plans bouncing around these days on how to reform our health care system. I don't think the details are going to matter much, because it's the goal that's flawed.
What if car insurers had to cover you at a standard rate regardless of your driving record or what kind of car you drive?
What if car insurance had to cover everything that might go wrong with your car, not just accidents?
What if mechanics were subject to hefty lawsuits for missing something in a diagnostic?
What if the government decided to give some people free car insurance and pay for it by raising premiums on the others?
What if the government determined how much the car insurance company could charge and the car insurance companies were big donors to those aspiring to gain positions in government?
What if every time an improvement to the automobile came out, you were automatically entitled to receive an upgrade?
What if car insurance companies decided how much mechanics got paid and for what?
What if employers were obliged to provide car insurance?
What if, whenever you took your car to the mechanic, you only had to pay a $20 co-pay?
What do you suppose would happen to the price of car insurance? Car repair? The quality of work? Do you think you might take your car in for a diagnostic more often if you knew you could get a new transmission for a $20 co-pay? Do you think you'd take better care of your car knowing you'd never have to pay for repairs? Do you think there might be some incentive for gaming such a system on the part of the insured as well as the mechanic or garage owner?
What we're attempting to provide in health insurance is really a bumper to bumper lifetime health warranty. through a third party payer and free of charge to a large segment of the population. There's not enough money in the world to make it work.
