Israel's response to the rocket fire from Gaza has been widely criticized as disproportionate and even a war crime. Some claim that such actions only breed more hatred and fanaticism, making Israel less secure. But, let's look at the facts.
In 1967 Israel launched a pre-emptive attack against Egyptian forces amassing on their border. Jordan and Syria joined forces with Egypt. Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria contributed troops and arms to the Arab forces. Six days later, Israel had won the war.
Although Egypt and Jordan aren't exactly staunch allies with Israel today, they have taken on a much more "live and let live" attitude. Syria still supports proxy groups that oppose Israel, but they do not openly take them on. Even when Israel bombed a suspected nuclear site in Syria last year, there was no overt retaliation.
In 2006 Israel rolled into Lebanon to put a stop to rocket attacks from Hezbollah. The confrontation was tougher for Israel than most had expected and the media has largely portrayed it as a victory for Hezbollah. Yet, the rocket attacks from Lebanon have stopped.
Now Israel has entered Gaza to stop Hamas rockets from being launched into its territory. They are no longer adhering to all the politically correct and predictable rules. They strike mosques that are suspected of harboring weapons caches and hit the homes of Hamas leaders. They have isolated Gaza city and divided the strip into 4 or 5 segments and the fact that they've called up thousands of reserves indicates they aren't leaving until they're done. "Done" means Hamas no longer has the stomach for open warfare on Israel.
Much of the world condemns Israel's tactics in dealing with terrorist attacks. But compare the results of military action vs. cease fire agreements, withdrawing from territories, U.N. resolutions and the various "roadmaps" to peace. Radicals bent on the elimination of the state of Israel don't abide by negotiated settlements. They do respond to pain. The message from Israel; Go ahead and hate us. Just don't shoot at us.
