President Obama is currently trying to decide whether to take General McChrysal’s advice and send another 40,000 troops to Afghanistan to support the mission there. Some analysts and pundits believe it’s more likely he will approve some kind of comprimise and send a lesser number of troops. I?hope this is not the case.
According to the Times of London, U.S. Chaplains in Afghanistan are reporting that troops are depressed, demoralized and unsure of what they’re trying to accomplish. As in any military conflict, if we’re not comitted to winning, we need to get our people out of harm’s way.
I don’t know if adding 40,000 troops will accomplish what we want to accomplish in Afghanistan, but I know the general who has been charged with pulling it off believes that’s what he needs. I’m inclined to trust the general knows what he’s talking about. Otherwise, why does he have the job?
U.S. soldiers are not pawns on a political chess board. They are sons, daughters, wives, husbands, brothers and sisters; real live human beings. They will do whatever they are asked to do for this country. The very least we can do is make sure they have everything they need to do it successfully and as safely as possible. If we are not willing to make that comittment, they must be brought home.
There can be no comprimise between success and failure here. We’re either comitted to success or it’s time to bail. Please don’t leave our troops hanging in some experimental, back room, half-hearted comprimise Mr. President. All in or all out. Pick one.
