Blogger Jaden Hair of Steamy Kitchen is sending movie contest winner Kelly to LA for an exclusive screening of Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams.

Kelly Goes to LA

Kelly of the blog, Sounding My Barbaric Gulp, should be on her way to Los Angelas by now. Kelly is not fond of flying, but is wicked excited to get there and schmooze with all the big stars. About two hours ago, her Twitter post said, "Waiting to get on the plane!! A little nervous still."

Glitz and glamour await her as Sony Pictures picks up the tab. She'll no doubt get picked up by a limo (that may be stretching it, but they did say car transportation was included), brought to a swanky hotel for 2 nights where she'll rest up for an unbelievably full day tomorrow, July 9th. Kelly will escorted to Arclight Theater on Sunset for an exclusive screening of the movie Julie & Julia. She'll meet Julie Powell, author of the book, go to a cooking demonstration at the California School of Culinary Arts, Hollywood, learn about food styling and talk endlessly about the movie. What an amazing opportunity! I wish I were going!

Sounding My Barbaric Gulp!

I first met Kelly over a year ago through the baking group Tuesdays With Dorie. Each week we (about 300 of us worldwide) bake the same recipe from the pages of Dorie Greenspan's cookbook, Baking: From My Home To Yours. We then post it on Tuesday, hence the name, Tuesdays With Dorie. At first I thought, what an odd name for a food blog, Sounding My Barbaric Gulp! Didn't sound too appetizing to me at the time. When I found out what the name really meant, it all made sense. Kelly says, "The title of my blog is a take off of a line from Walt Whitman's poem "Song of Myself": I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable, I sound my barbaric YAWP over the roofs of the world."

Interview with Kelly from Sounding My Barbaric Gulp!

  • Kelly: First, I of course want to thank Jaden for offering up her trip and Kamran for choosing me as one of the top ten finalists.

Food Blog Examiner (me): You almost didn't leave a comment on Steamy Kitchen's blog. What made you change your mind?

  • Kelly: I was reading through the other comments and just thought "what the heck"; it couldn't hurt to write a little something.  I NEVER thought I'd win.  In fact, I was scheduled to work at the cooking school (Kitchen Conservatory in St. Louis) all weekend.  Thankfully, they are being very nice and have found people to cover my shifts! ;-)

Food Blog Examiner: Did you forget about the contest after that and go about your daily business?

  • Kelly: Absolutely! I was getting ready to go to a friend's house for dinner and spent most of the afternoon baking!

Food Blog Examiner: How did you find out that you won? Who told you?

  • Kelly: I didn't get home from dinner until 10:00.  I checked Twitter on my iPhone when I got home and saw Jaden had posted a link to her post announcing the winner.  I almost didn't even read the link!  But, then figured I'd better check it just in case. I quickly read through her post, skimmed the "top 10" list...so fast in fact that I didn't even notice my name on it...then saw my name listed as the winner at the end. I was shocked! I went back and re-read the post slowly.  Then, I got on my computer to check her post...just to make sure.  My boyfriend Jerad was out walking our dog, and I opened up the door as soon as he got back to tell him the news!

Food Blog Examiner: What was the first thing that popped into your head at that moment? Did you picture Julia? Did you scream? Was your heart racing? Did you have to sit down or you'd faint?

  • Kelly: I really just couldn't believe it!  Of course my heart was racing.  I started pacing as I kept looking at that line on Jaden's post: "So Ms. Kelly at Barbaric Gulp…congrats!"  I waiting on the porch for Jerad to return but got too antsy and went back inside.  All I kept thinking was "I'm going to LA on Wednesday! Oh no, I'll have to fly!"  :-)

Food Blog Examiner: Who was the first person you told?

  • Kelly: I told Jerad first, but then I called my manager at Kitchen Conservatory, a co-worker, and Jerad's mom.

Food Blog Examiner: I know you're real busy packing, but did you go to the salon first for a makeover, new hair style, new nails? Any new clothes, shoes, handbags?

  • Kelly: I DID get a new haircut today (yesterday)!  And I bought a new pair of shoes, nothing fancy...just a pair of black sandals with a little heel.  ;-)

Food Blog Examiner: Did you buy a new Blackberry or laptop for the trip to keep everyone connected?

  • Kelly: I actually bought an iPhone just a few weeks ago, and I am glad I did!  I got a new Macbook from work (I teach HS English), and I may drive to the school in the morning to pick it up to take with me.

Food Blog Examiner: How have your (blog) stats been since everyone found out about you winning? A million emails? Twitter going through the roof?

  • Kelly: I've gotten three times the amounts of visits on my blog--and many new Twitter followers--since the announcement.

Food Blog Examiner: Is there a lucky someone going with you, and if so, who?

  • Kelly: Nope, I'll be traveling alone!

Food Blog Examiner: Any other plans while you're in LA? Special restaurant, stars to see, autographs?

  • Kelly: As of right now, I plan to have dinner at either Osteria Mozza or Pizzeria Mozza with Amy Sherman (of Cooking with Amy).

Stay tuned for more news on Kelly's big adventure!

The article, Steamy Kitchen Announces Julie & Julia Movie Winner, tells all about the blog contest and how it came to be! Make sure to check out the really great YouTube movie trailer of Julia & Julia in that article as well.
