Having a chance to represent your country in an international golf event is a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience that only the game's elite usually get a chance to do.
However, five golfers with handicaps ranging from 5 to 24, will do just that in the 15th World Golfers Championship in Marbella, Spain after winning their respective flights in the U.S. finals qualifying at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL.
Florida golfers Kevin Simpson (5), Mike Vandiver (11.9), Tony Ott (18) and Frank McInereny (24) along with Parker Smith (6.1) from Arizona are the lucky guys who get to do it, joining captain Anders Bengtson for the trip to Spain Oct. 23-31 where they will join golfers from 32 other countries.
Sometimes it doesn't pay to do a favor for a friend. The case in point is that I managed to get a special invite for Smith. It turns out we were in the same flight and if he had not played, I might be going to Spain since I finished second in that flight. For some unknown reason, I figured I needed to make that 18-footer for birdie on my last hole, but I not only missed it but also missed the three-footer coming back. Choke? Probably.
But then Bengtson sent an e-mail two days later. inviting me to play in the invitional part of the tournament with him. So I am still getting to go to Spain after all.
More golfers in the U.S. need to think about trying to earn such honors in 2010 by suggesting to their clubs to conduct qualifying events to send teams of five to the national tournament. Go to www.worldgolfersusa.com for more details or call Bengtson at 516 313-9083 on how to do it.
