I

While I'm sure Tim Finchem is overloaded with opinions about how to improve the FedEx Cup, I'm going to add my "two cents" worth.

I really do not think the golfing public considers the FedEX Cup a true playoff like those in other sports since the eventual winner of the finale isn't declared the champion.

Phil Mickelson closed with a 65 at East Lake in Atlanta to capture the 2009 Tour Championship by three strokes over Tiger Woods, collecting the $1.3 million top prize while Woods had to settle for $800,000. However, Woods emerged as the winner of the FedEx Cup despite some anxious moments on the back side and collected $10 million. Mickelson settled for $3 million. To be honest, those figures are just out of line considering all that is going on with the economy.

My suggestion is to reduce the number of playoff events to just three--four is just too many even with a week off between the last two. Keep the current point system or even use the money list to determine the 125 players for the first event. Then the field would be reduced to 64 for the second tournament and to 32 for the Tour Championship. Of course, there would probably need to be some interesting sudden-death playoffs to decide who advanced.

Then I would conduct the Tour Championship at match play, starting with 32 players with the seedings based on total scores for both of the previous events. Can you just image the drama associated with such elimination events, leading to a 36-hole big money finale? Having a Tiger vs. Phil match would be an added  bonus, but then you could be left with a Steve Stricker vs. Sean O'Hair match. I'd still watch it no matter who was playing.
