Will Zalatoris of Plano made a five-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to give he and partner Nathan Weant of Hallsville the title in the Legends Junior Tour Four Ball Championship at Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston.
“That is the most nervous I’ve ever been over a putt,” said Zalatoris, 13, after the awards presentation “I’m so glad it went in.”
Zalatrois and Weant closed with a 65 to match the 132 total of Blake Pugh and Matthew Isler of Soutlake, who were hurt by a pair of back side bogies, but got into the playoff with a birdie on the 16th.
Both Zalatoris and Weant earned an American Junior Golf Association tournament exemption and an invitation to the 2010 HP Byron Nelson Junior Championship, scheduled June 28-30 at the Lakewood Country Club in Dallas.
Brad Dalke of Mansfield and D.J. Godoy of Hideaway raced past the field to win the boys 14 & under division by 11 shots. The win was the third for Dalke in three events this season.
The Frisco duo of Taylor Newlin and Alexis Thompson claimed the girls 15-18 title, earning exemptions to one AJGA event.
The Legends Junior Tour schedule includes the Spring Preview March 15-16 at Gentle Creek Golf Club in Prosper, the Charles Coody Junior Classic June 22-23 at Tierra Verde Golf Course in Arlington and the Lanny Wadkins Junior Championship Aug. 2-3 at the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas.
