Depression today is more widespread than the common cold. For about 40% of the population drugs are the short term option of choice. But for others these drugs may not work or may even cause harm. Here are some suggestions of sensible choices to research.

1) One of the best ways to get a hold of your life is to affirm you are going to do so. Sometimes the first step is to vow to yourself that you are going to do whatever it takes to get this handled.

2) Know that this is not your fault. Science is now discovering that 2 things usually produce moods:

The first issue is most likely bio-chemical. The brain needs an enormous flow of nutrients in order to make the right chemicals for balanced functioning. Without enough ‘feel good’ neurotransmitters you most likely cannot control your mood. Peptides in the brain carry information through the body enabling cell to brain communication. Neurotransmitters, steroids, and other biochemical processes are responsible for the dialog between the conscious cognitive level and the meta-cognitive or emotional and unconscious levels. Stress creates all sorts of toxic build up, not to mention all the millions of man made chemicals we are assaulted with daily. Keeping a healthy brain is quite a trick these days. Science is growing up. Find a health practitioner who can measure which nutrients are missing for your brain and what toxins need to be flushed.

The second cause could be suppressed feelings that feel too intense to bear alone. This is a natural mechanism of the brain to protect you. You can learn to bypass it by getting the right support by a professional or a loving community.

3) Get direct sunlight or use a light box. You just may need more good quality light in your life.

4) Exercise. You may be too depressed or lethargic to get going but it is one of the major things you can do to BUILD more energy. Endorphins are released when you exercise. These substances are produced in the brain and reduce pain emotionally and physically. Start for just a few minutes a day. Get a friend to work out or walk with. Run for 10 minutes every day. Ever hear of ‘runners high?’ Blood flow, release of toxins and a general sense of well-being will come from a weekly or daily practice. You’ll probably even sleep better.

5) Find your spirit. There are so many ways today to get into your own unique brand of spirituality. Prayer, community, reading; all these can lift your spirit and give you a handle on higher ground. Depression is a sign that you are outside of your own energy flow and going in the wrong direction. Turn around and find your flow. One of the best and cheapest ways to do this is with Michael Brown’s, “The Presence Process.” Deep breathing stimulates the vagus nerve which allows the body to relax and expand.

6) Sing, repeat a happy phrase or mantra, chant. Get your voice going to build you up. Laugh just because.

7) Super foods – Do you know that we have about 20 trillion human cells in our bodies and about 10X that in bacteria cells? A lot of depression can be traced to a bacterial imbalance. Being in a polluted world with a weak food chain can explain a lot of our diseases. By changing diet, stopping sugar intake and eating higher quality whole foods energy levels and moods shift naturally. Serotonin is believed to relieve anxiety and depression. There are natural ways of getting serotonin. St. Johns Wort, Zeolite, B Vitamins especially 1,3 6 and12, amino acids like L-tyrosine, D,L-phenylalanine and L-tryptophan. Ask your doctor or therapist about these alternatives.
