This article is part of an off-and-on "This date in MLS history" series in July featuring Major League Soccer games with multiple stoppage-time goals.
Though there wasn't as much of a thrill factor on this date in 2001, the Kansas City Wizards held off the New England Revolution for an important 2-1 victory at Foxboro Stadium in a game that featured a couple goals beyond regulation.
The victory was a huge rebound for the Wizards after they were thoroughly embarrassed by the visiting Chicago Fire, 7-0, just three days prior.
On July 7, the Wizards were clinging to a 1-0 lead on the strength of a Chris Klein goal in the 66th minute. Gary Glasgow rebounded his own shot and sent the ball to Klein for the tally past Revs goalkeeper Jose Carlo Fernandez. The Wizards headed into stoppage time and Kansas City's Chris Brown provided a two-goal cushion on a give-and-go with Onandi Lowe
Revs defender Mauricio Wright added a stoppage-time goal about a minute later to make things interesting with a 2-1 deficit, but K.C.'s lead held up and the Revs' five-game unbeaten streak ended.
Every win was vital for this particular Wizards squad, which was attempting to defend its MLS championship having lost Preki to the Miami Fusion (the only season he played outside of K.C.).
They Wizards managed to make the playoffs as a No. 8 seed (eight of the 12 MLS teams qualified for the playoffs), posting an 11-13-3 regular-season record. Preki's Fusion coincidentally topped the Wizards in the first round of the playoffs.
July's multi-stoppage-time moments:
• July 2, 2003: Quakes' Donovan salvages point vs. MetroStars
• July 4, 2003: Rapids' Chung follows through with halftime promise
• July 7, 2001: Wizards rebound from embarrassing 7-0 loss to Fire
