In 2005, the New England Revolution's Jose Cancela scored his first goal of the season, just 19 seconds into the game, as the Revs defeated the visiting N.Y./N.J. MetroStars, 4-2.

Entering the 2009 Major League Soccer season, Cancela's goal is the second-fastest in MLS history behind Dwayne De Rosario's 11-second goal on Sept. 27, 2003. Cancela's strike outside of the box went over MetroStars goalkeeper Zach Wells' reach and under the crossbar.

"We gave them a goal in the first minute," Wells said. "A very decent strike; I think I was a little out of position, but give credit to (Cancela). He took it well, and from minute 1 we were behind."

Actually, the Metros fought back to take a 2-1 lead with back-to-back goals in the 67th and 68th minutes. But the Revs stormed back with goals from Jay Heaps, Steve Ralston, and finally Pat Noonan in stoppage time as they improved to 9-1-4.

"Really, we were outplayed for 69 of the first 70 minutes," Revs coach Steve Nicol admitted. "Then we just found some heart and guts."
