Looking for a weekend scenic drive?  From Billings, Montana you are definitely in the right place because there are numerous treks through this region for seeing beautiful scenery whether it be mountains, plains, rivers or forests.  Here are a few ideas for a Saturday or a Sunday or any day.

The 136 miles from Browning, Montana to Wolf Creek, Montana is a drive along the "Rocky Mountain Front" on US HWY-89 and then US HWY-287.  Along the way there is the town of Heart Butte, Freezeout Lake NWR, Sun River Game Range and Holter Lake Recreational Area.  http://www.usbr.gov/niwqp/niwqpprojects/freezeoutsunriver.htm  http://www.blm.gov/mt/st/en/fo/butte_field_office/recreation/holter.html  http://russell.visitmt.com/communities/HeartButte.htm                                 http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-10832-Billings-Sightseeing-Examiner~y2009m9d25-Sun-River-Montana

From Livingston to Sluice Boxes State Park (a 140 mile drive) on US HWY-89 will take you through the valley between the Bridger Mountains (see the photo at the top of this article) and the Crazy Mountains.  On the way you can see the towns of Monarch, Neihart, White Sulphur Springs, Ringling, Wilsall and Clyde Park.  This road was one of my routes when I worked for Randy the Hides Guy.

A drive from Lewistown to Malta on US HWY-191 (133 miles) will put you in range of the C. M. Russell NWR, Mission Canyon, and the Missouri River Breaks.  2 miles north of the junction of US HWY-191 and MT-66 on Bull Creek Road will get you to Kid Curry's Hideout.  http://www.fws.gov/cmr/  http://www.examiner.com/x-10832-Billings-Sightseeing-Examiner~y2009m5d12-The-Outlaw-Trail

The drive from Eddie's Corner to Big Timber is 83 miles on US HWY-191 where you can see the Crazy Mountains, Crystal Lake, the Judith River wildlife area, Ackley Lake State Park, and the towns of Eddie's Corner, Sipple, Garneill, Judith Gap, Harlowton, Melville and Big Timber.  http://russell.visitmt.com/listings/2755.htm  http://russell.visitmt.com/communities/Garneill.htm  http://fwp.mt.gov/lands/site_282450.aspx                                                                http://www.examiner.com/x-10832-Billings-Sightseeing-Examiner~y2009m11d5-Harlowton  http://russell.visitmt.com/listings/2370.htm                                                   http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-10832-Billings-Sightseeing-Examiner~y2009m10d1-Judith-River-Montana

There are a lot of possibilities on the Bighorn Scenic Drive.  US HWY-16, US HWY-14 and US HWY-14A crisscross through this region not far from us and will take you to the Bighorn National Recreation Area, Fort Phil Kearney, the Story Fish Hatchery, the battlefields of the Wagon Box Fight and the Fetterman Massacre, and the Medicine Lodge Archaeological Site.  http://www.nps.gov/bica/index.htm  http://wyoparks.state.wy.us/Site/SiteInfo.asp?siteID=21  http://gf.state.wy.us/admin/hatchery/story.asp  http://www.philkearny.vcn.com/fettermanfight.htm

Winter road hazards such as snow drifts and poor visibility and winter road closures affect all the roads in our area so exercise caution during your travels -- good luck and have fun!
