It is becoming a great trend throughout the United States with pet stores signing up for the “Puppy Friendly” pledge. This pledge states they will not sell puppies and the will promote adoption from a shelter at their facility. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is going to pet stores, shops and boutiques and asking them to sign up for the pledge to start and set the standard for pet shops alike. This is showing other pet stores that they are making it by not selling puppies and so can they.
When signing up with the pledge, the store receives a packet full of information and a sign to post. The sign states that that store loves puppies and that is why they do not sell them. They are also given materials on adopting a puppy or dog from a shelter and also on how to find a reputable breeder if needed. The HSUS is not thinking everyone will adopt a shelter or rescue puppy so they are also helping people find actual reputable breeders that take care and concern for their puppies and make sure they keep their reputation.
Stores in Kansas City, MO, stores in Kansas City, KS as well as Santa Fe and Taos, NM have taken that pledge. Here is a list of the most current participants to the “Puppy Friendly” pledge.
