Pets: a great child companion
Recently multiple incidents have been featured in papers and on television regarding animal cruelty. Cruelty to animals is a harsh reality and many animal lovers can not fathom why such actions are taken against beings that usually can not defend themselves. Though we can not save every animal being mistreated, we should all do our part in helping prevent abuse in our own homes. Many people do not realize that animal abuse occurs in a variety of methods. A particularly sad and quite common negligence is occurring in homes with both pets and children.
Many pointless accidents are occurring everyday in which animals are hurt by children simply because there is a lack of parental guidance. A pet is an absolutely great companion for a child who is ready for the responsibilties associated with pet ownership. Often the child is too young to understand the responsibility of pet ownership. Parents and guardians of young children need to really research information about pets and different breeds of animals before adopting or purchasing one. A child needs to display some signs of responsibility and maturity before a life is placed in their hands.
Frequently children are able to develop a respect and love for animals and really build friendships with their pets. As parents it is an important initiative to show a child that life is not disposable but is a treasure in any instance. Take time to explain to a child how to provide appropriate care and safety methods. As pet owners we need to strive to give an animal a happy and nurturing environment just as we would another human being.
Please do not purchase or adopt an animal for your child with the idea that a pet is another “toy” that can be replaced. It is a sad truth that animals are mistreated simply because of their convenience. It is time to view animals as another life and not a superfluous being. Lets all encourage the next generation to possess a love and respect for animal life so we can see a decrease in these horrible acts of animal cruelty.
