With winter approaching temperatures are starting to drop in Texas. The cold weather can be an enjoyable time for pets but the cold can have adverse affects on outdoor cats and dogs. A couple of simple tips can help your animal stay comfortable and healthy throughout winter.

It is necessary to have an outdoor shelter for your pet. They sell cat/dog homes at most department stores and pet supply stores. Pet homes can also be made out of large plastic Rubbermaid containers for relatively little money. It is important to keep dry linen in the house to provide warmth and comfort for pets. Thick blankets that are no longer being used serve as good bedding material. A small heat lamp is also a good idea for very cold nights. If possible it is best to set up shelters inside a garage or shed because the environment will naturally provide more heat.

It is important to provide more food in winter. It is a good idea to offer high fat meals to your pets to contribute to weight gain. A few extra pounds in the winter can provide much needed heat and is usually lost very quickly when warmer weather arrives. Continue to provide fresh water throughout the year it is essential for survival.

If it is feasible it is recommended that outdoor pets occasionally be allowed to get a break from cold weather. Allowing them indoors and monitoring them closely can be a much needed treat for pets. Be sure to continue giving them affection and provide a nurturing environment for your pet.
