With June coming to an end we still have many hot days of summer left. As we draw near to July 4th and the associated celebrations it is important to protect your pets. Just take into consideration some important safety precautions to keep you and your loved ones safe. July 4th is usually a time to celebrate with family, fireworks and extreme heat.

As many pet owners know fireworks can cause unnecessary stress for animals. If you see that your pet is shaking, drooling, refusing to eat, or pacing then you may want to take your pets inside. Some animals are not bothered by loud noises correlated with thunder storms and fireworks. Regardless it is a good idea to keep animals in a kennel or a room away from noises. Keep cold water available to help pets beat the heat.

Due to fear associated with noise and lights there is an increase of missing pets after holidays associated with fireworks.  If you choose to keep your cat or dog outside make sure that all their identification information is accurate and readily available in case he/she gets away.

If you are planning a large celebration make sure that people are aware that your pets are present. While working at animal clinics in the past many people had problems with their animals getting injured due to a large amount of people visiting. It may be best to just put your cat or dog in a bedroom away from the crowd. If you have a small animal pay special attention that it is not stepped on by a visitor which is a very common occurrence.

Another problem that many clients faced was visitors feeding their dogs or cats. If your animal has special dietary needs inform guests so they will be careful to prevent your pet from eating table scraps. If a pet suffers from severe reoccurring pancreatitis or other digestive disorders it is probably necessary to just keep your pet in a confined space away from people.

If the stress of strangers and fireworks seems to be unbearable to your dog or cat it is a good idea to talk to your vet about mild sedatives. There is a large assortment of anxiety medication and tranquilizers that can be used to treat stress.

As you prepare for a great holiday weekend with family and friends just keep pet safety in mind. Be prepared for fireworks, strangers, and heat associated with the July 4th weekend. Take the appropriate precautions so this holiday can be pleasant and memorable. Happy 4th of July!
