Do you know what today is? It's the day when America's racial wounds will be healed, The End. The White House says there will be no apologies today, which makes one wonder what's the point anyway. Oh, yes, let's do a rundown:

1. This was a simple misunderstanding that wouldn't have made the local paper were it not for there being one famous player, Henry Louis Gates.

2. Gates is one of this nation's shining lights in academia. He looks adorable on a tricycle. But let's face it, he did overreact here. This is not a race thing: One does not yell at cops without good reason.

3. The cop, Sgt. James Crowley, also overreacted by arresting Gates. We get it: you're the cop and it's not cool to yell at you. Still, you should have let the raving oldster be. He didn't pose a danger to himself or others, right?

4. President Obama stepped in it. When you are POTUS you probably should avoid saying things like "I don't know all the facts, but..." and then weighing in anyway. This goes for Iranian nukes, the Mideast, NATO, China, and above freaking all, race.

In recent days Gates hasn't sounded like he was backing down, which is worrisome. Overall, though, it's safe to say that this will be a good photo op and then we can all move back to slapfighting about health care or whatever. And hey, on the bright side, at least two probably-racist definitely-moronic government workers have gotten or will get the boot because of all this. Progress. Now, America, isn't it time to heal?
