While the minor leagues are always a place for fans to see possible future major league stars come through town, it’s still a rare treat when a true major league starter hits the scene. It’s an even rarer happening when a major league player the caliber of Manny Ramirez can be seen, taint or not.
Ramirez, or Manram, as he’s known to his adoring public, is traveling with the Albuquerque Isotopes while serving out the remainder of a 50 game suspension imposed on him thanks to testing positive for a performance enhancing substance that he has dismissed, when he’s talked about it all; as something that was supposed to help his performance in the bedroom, but is most known to help steroid abusers recover their testosterone once they’ve completed a cycle of use.
With his long suspension almost at an end, Albuquerque’s parent club, the Los Angeles Dodgers decided that Ramirez would be better prepared to rejoin the big club if he got some swings in the minors.
Manny’s tour of the lower circuit comes to Omaha beginning Saturday night at 7:05 PM. The game also marks the return to Nebraska for the Royals themselves, who completed their College World Series accommodating extra long road trip tonight.
The O-Royals return home after the disastrous road trip that saw them win just two games, against 14 losses. It’s been a pretty disastrous season overall for a team that had high hopes of competition when the year began. Injuries, and the parent club Kansas City Royals raiding the team for fresh bodies have caused the team to stumble mightily, and any real chance to compete in the PCL American North has long since faded.
This is why series similar to the kind they’ll play against the Isotopes can be so important. The team would certainly like to stay competitive, like to collect as many wins as possible, but as an organization there is now another goal which begins to overshadow the race to the post season, and that’s getting these AAA players as ready as possible to play on the major league stage.
A key step in those preparations is facing off against the likes of a Manny Ramirez. Love him, or hate him, he is in the top 1% of all major leaguers as far as talent goes. Rusty or not, Ramirez is a glimpse into a future so many of the Omaha Royals hope to fulfill.
Beating Albuquerque will be the key goal for the O-Royals tomorrow night, and throughout this weekend, but Manram won’t be in the minors for long, and those who get to face him on this whistle-stop tour, shouldn’t take facing off against him for granted
