Religious people often miss this teaching given by Christ to the most religious scholars of His time. The Pharisees in Matthew 23:25 were so consumed with the outside that they missed the more important aspect - the unseen inside. In today's society, we are very similar to the Pharisees in so many ways. We too judge the book by its cover. The religious amongst us, are more concerned with 'image' and the appearance of piety than they are about true spirituality.
Fasting, while very definitely an awesome tool in the spiritual toolbox available to Christians is often used to 'demonstrate' a super spirituality, rather than a humbling of the flesh. Religion manifests in so many ways, very subtle ways, but it always has one common element. What will people think? Religion is consumed by what people will think of you. Religion always focuses on the outside, the seen realm, while ignoring the unseen (spiritual realm). Religion walks by sight, and not faith.
Religion will give you a series of rules and regulations to live by, in order to attain some mode of righteousness. Christ came to set us free from religion, law and empty ritual. The very nature of the gospel is to set the captives free from the pressure of conforming to a religious order that is in itself empty. Paul said it like this:"..they have a form of godliness, but deny the power there of..."
Religion has this as its focus. Its all about form, ritual and ultimately emptiness. The ritual does not fulfill you. Its God to comes upon you and fills you with His very nature. The word 'upon' is in actual fact an old English contraction made up of two words. The word 'upon' should actually be read :"up and on you". The Holy Spirit will come up and on you. He will rise up within you, filling you to overflowing and then flow on you. He will literally flow over you, cleaning your inside and giving you a whole new life from the inside out.
Are you tired of empty religion? Come and meet Christ. He is more concerned about your inside than your outside...
