Do Ghosts really exist? The answer is surprisingly simple enough, :”Yes and No”. I am going to explain this argument using the bible as my sole source. This in itself is not meant to be a scientific  evaluation or even a paranormal evaluation of these ‘entities’, but rather a biblical evaluation…and as such there is no ‘fact’ that can be proven using scientific empirical analysis.

Luke 16:19-31 gives us a crystal clear understanding of the bible’s view on this subject.  Luke 16:26 Abraham says that there is a gulf fixed between Hell and the earth so that the dead cannot pass back to the living. In other words, there is no way that spirits of dead people can come back to bring a message to the living. Not through dreams, or personal experiences. Neither can people communicate with the dead!

So what is the ghost phenomenon that we have either experienced first hand  (like I have) or have heard about? The answer is not so simple. There are two major types of angels. We have angels, also known as ministering spirits, and then there are of the fallen variety, also known as demons, devils, evil spirits etc.

Ghosts as such are merely demons in disguise. The bible records that satan can appear as an angel of light. Deception is nothing new in the bag of tricks used by satan. In fact, deception is pretty much all he has. Who would you rather meet in a dark home at night? We all want to have contact with departed loved ones. We often are plagued with the unsaid things we wish we had a second chance to say. It is this very inherent need found within each of us, that the devil uses to exploit when he wants to deceive us.

Every con artist knows a simple truth. Most victims of a scam, are scammed as a result of their own desires. The devil locates the specific want that the unsuspecting individual has, and then takes on that likeness. It is easier for us to believe in a “disembodied spirit” (ghost) that it is to believe in an evil spirit. Add to the mix that we generally want to ‘hear’ from the ‘beyond’ with a natural curiosity about the paranormal and you have the correct formula for a ‘spiritual scam’!

I do not mean to make light of the supernatural world. I have encountered spirits personally on many occasions, enough to take this seriously. I have seen demons throw people across the room, levitate, speak with other languages. In 1 Corinthians 13:1 the Apostle Paul says that there are tongues (languages) of both angels and men. In other words, there are angelic languages, or as I prefer to put it, there are spiritual languages. Spirit filled Christians have recognized the gift of tongues. Paul goes on further in the verse and say that without love these languages are plain noise. All languages, spiritual or human if not motivated by love are noisy.

Back on track, I have heard spiritual languages and I have heard noise emanating from spirits. I have encountered poltergeists (as the world knows these demons) in homes where I have been asked to restore the peace of the home. As a pastor, I am often called upon to advise people on the subject of paranormal activities, especially where a believer is involved. I have found sanctuary in the bible verse Ephesians 1:19-23.  Christ has placed all things under His feet through His bloodshed on Calvary. He has been placed far above every principality , power dominion and every name that is named. In verse 22 Paul says that ALL things have been placed under His feet. All things are all things.
