Put down that cancer stick!

The American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout is nearly 28 years old. The idea grew from a gentleman by the name of Arthur P. Mullaney who asked people to give up cigarettes for a day in Randolph Massachusetts. The money that they would have spent on cigarettes was donated to a high school for a scholarship fund. Several years later the first National Great American Smokeout was held in 1977.

Although there has been a significant amount of success making the public aware of the detrimental effects of tobacco, it has been estimated that 47 million Americans are smokers. Approximately half of the smokers in America will die prematurely from this nasty habit. More than 80 percent of lung cancer related cases are linked to smokers. If you’re a smoker it’s important that you quit now rather than later!

There are different tools and support groups that can be of assistance during this time period. The American Cancer Society offers a hotline that you can call to get tips on how to quit smoking. There are a multitude of websites that will also provide helpful information however be aware of the scam artists that will hypnotize you into a smoke free life. It takes commitment and hard work, it’s not easy. Try setting a quit date, by doing this you can slowly decrease the amount of cigarettes you smoke a day making the transition somewhat easier.

When someone decides to quit smoking they decide to change their entire lifestyle. By riding yourself of this habit you will dramatically change the way you live. For example your endurance during aerobic activity (even walking) will increase. You will begin to feel less breathless and you will be able to increase the length of your exercises. Start a new life today and quit smoking!
