All dog trainers agree that a tired dog is a good dog and that there are many ways to tire a dog out. My least favorite would be the method a TV trainer advocates- hooking a dog up to a treadmill and letting him trudge along. B-o-r-i-n-g!
Treadmills are boring even for humans. That’s why they come with elaborate book holders and video programs to simulate a walk on the woods. Even in gyms treadmills are usually in a room with TV’s. That’s because walking on a treadmill is boring.
I joke that my neighborhood is so exclusive that we have built in treadmills – they’re called sidewalks! When my dog and I go for a walk all of our senses are stimulated.
I smell fresh cut grass while I walk. My dog smells that too but I think he’s more interested in the smell of the dead bird in the yard we are passing.
I see that the neighbor two houses down has planted new flowers. My dog sees a cat stalking something a half a block away.
I feel the gravel crunch under my feet while my dog feels the grass and leaves as he roams a bit to my side from lawn to lawn.
I hear the wind rustling the leaves in the trees. My dog hears the kids playing up at the school 3 blocks away.
Yeah, this beats a treadmill any day!
