Pier Park
Where: 166h & Collins Ave., Sunny Isles Beach
When: Sunrise - Sunset
Why: Beer on the Pier
Other: You enjoy frustration with tiny, overpriced parking lots
Pier Park is not a park. It is a parking lot that gives you access to Newport Pier. It also has a bathroom. That’s about it.
The parking is very limited and usually full, despite the high prices. It charges a flat fee of $6 on weekdays and $10 on weekends. The real problem, though, is that there’s nowhere else nearby to park. A long mile south is Haulover Park, which charges $5, and a longer mile north is the "Walgreens" lot; you'll never make it to the pier from here.
Newport Pier itself is scenic, although the far end is under construction. You can still chill out with beer and fried foods at the restaurant, Pelicans on the Pier (305-945-9228).
Officially, you're not allowed to swim under the pier, but with a mask or pair of googles, you can peer inside and see plenty of large snook and other silvery residents.
