The best way to experience the Everglades in one day is not by boat, car, or even by foot. Because of a trail jutting into its heart, the Everglades is best seen by bike.
At Shark Valley, the entrance to Everglades National Park looks umpromising and the parking is limited, but don't be discouraged. Bring your bikes or rent one here and launch into a 15 mile round-trip unlike any other in the world.
Although you could take the tram and feel "safer," biking is the way to go. All of your senses are engaged as you roll within a few feet of the numerous alligators. At the half-way point, park the bike and enjoy a big pay-off at the futuristic observation tower. Nothing but sawgrass.
The birds and turtles abound, too, but the black gators steal the show. According to the park rangers, no one has been bitten (yet). The biggest threat would be the bugs, especially during the summer. Bring protection.
The trail at Shark Valley is a unique combination of exercise and ecosystem appreciation. You pump your muscles and trespass into a world usually off limits to humans but abounding with life.
This year, on Halloween day, get even closer by slogging through the wetlands.
