While the band criss-crosses the country with the Aussies in Jet, Papa Roach solidered on with their touring behind their changing of gears album “Metamorphosis”. In front of a decent crowd of just over 2,000 (hey, if you can get at least 2,000 at the 3,000 capacity Fillmore Detroit these days- you’re doing pretty good) people, Papa Roach played spirited run-through of their crowd favorites and gave the crowd a taste of the new album during their 65 minute set.
Starting with the opener “Change or Die”, it was obvious that lead singer Jacoby Shaddix and company are really selling their shift in sound for all its worth. After dabbling with a down and dirty and sometimes sleazy brand of hard rock the past few albums, the band went full force with the new album. Early on, the band played the first single “Lifeline”, which comes across better live than it initially did on the album. With the new songs, the obvious fan favorite is the Motley Crue-esque “I Almost Told You That I Loved You”, and seemed to please the fans greatly.
Even with the shift in the material, Papa Roach still is best when delivering tracks from their past. Songs like “Broken Home” and “Getting Away With Murder”, Shaddix seems to be more comfortable with those songs and provides a spark with the crowd when playing those songs. The secret weapon of the band still continues to be guitarist Jerry Horton, who provides the backbone behind songs like “To Be Loved” and others that the crowd ate all of it up.
After a long break from touring in the States, Jet provided a lot of fun in their hour long set. Playing tracks like the opener “Cold Hard Bitch” and “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is”, Nic Cester and company gave the crowd the band’s AC/DC style of garage rock and reminded fans in Detroit how capable they were on putting a really good show.
Papa Roach continues to tour the United States through the end of the year. Dates and additional band info can be found at www.paparoach.com.
