Want to be a TV star? Two shows are holding casting calls in the next week. Meanwhile, among other news, local culinary star Daniel Patterson’s Ferry Building rotisserie has opened - and don’t wait to get your tickets for three tasty charity events that are likely to sell out.   And of course, at the very end, you’ll find my picks for the best chefs’ tweets of the past week.

Fame and fortune?

The Next Food Network Star

Come to the W Hotel ( 181 Third Street) on Sunday, July 26, between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, armed with two recent photos, your resume, this application - and be prepared to dazzle the producers. You might end up hosting your own Food Network TV show.

The Winemakers

On Monday, July 27th, Crushpad ( 2573 Third St.) will be hosting the only California casting call for Season 2 of The Winemakers, the new reality TV show based on the challenges of viticulture and enology. Email for more information.

Openings and news

Il Cane Rosso now open

The first of Daniel Patterson’s (chef/owner of Coi) and Lauren Kiino’s two projects opened this past week at the Ferry Building in the space formerly occupied by Mistral. Il Cane Rosso is a casual, quick-serve rotisserie and sandwich shop, “inspired by the small, family-run food stores that have fed > Southern Italy for generations,” according to the owners, and will serve breakfast and lunch daily. The heart of the kitchen is a rotisserie, where you’ll find whole chickens, pork, and other meats twirling. There will also be a varying selection of sandwiches and antipasti. Breakfast offerings might include: warm citrus brioche with buffalo milk yogurt and wildflower honey or a fried egg sandwich with pancetta, pesto and mozzarella. Monday to Saturday, 8 am-8 pm, and Sunday, 10 am-8 pm; 415-391-7599.

Eat like an Egyptian

On Wednesday evenings through September 30, the de Young Museum will be open from 5–7:30 pm, for special discount showings of Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs – dubbed “Tut at Twilight.”

They’ll also be serving a prix fixe menu ($14; $21 with a glass of wine) Wednesday nights at the de Young Café, featuring Egyptian and Mediterranean dishes. The three-course menu includes items like misri (Egyptian) chicken kebabs: dukkau-spiced, marinated chicken served over an eggplant & tomato ragout topped with minted yogurt raita.

New chef at Vitrine

Romuald Feger is now executive chef at the San Francisco St. Regis and its restaurant, Vitrine. Feger previously was executive chef at the St. Regis Bora Bora, including serving as chef de cuisine at Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Lagoon, located at the hotel. Feger started his career working at French hotels and has also cooked at Le Cirque in New York

New three-course menu at Masa’s

Masa’s is offering a new three-course tasting menu for $65. You get to select two savories and one dessert from the current five-course menu; wine pairings are an additional $39. The three-course menu is available Tuesday through Saturday, from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

Benefits

Moveable Feast, August 4

The last of CUESA’s (the organization that operates the Ferry Building Farmers Market) monthly dinners for this season will be at Americano, where chef Paul Arenstam and Incanto's Chris Cosentino will collaborate on a menu “packed with the summer's best fruits and veggies from Dirty Girl Produce,” including heirloom tomato panzanella and cucumber salad; whole roasted California striped bass with fennel salmoriglio; spit-roasted porchetti with greens; and summer fruit crisp. Tickets are $80; $100 with wine pairings.

Wine.Dine.Donate, August 6

This year, the Epicurious-hosted dinner benefiting the San Francisco Food Bank is part of SFChefs.Food.Wine. I attended last year, and highly recommend it! The event features Epicurious Editor-in-Chief Tanya Steel, chefs Arnold Eric Wong (E & O Trading Co.), Charles Phan (The Slanted Door/Heaven's Dog), and Martin Yan (Yan Can Cook), as well as featured farmers, at a reception and 4-course dinner “celebrating local interpretations of Pacific Rim flavors.” The evening kicks off with hors d'oeurves, along with cocktails designed by Master Mixologist Victoria D'Amato-Moran. The seated dinner will include wine from the New Zealand Winegrowers. Tickets are $150, available at the SFChefs.Food.Wine website. Get your tickets fast – last year sold out.

Share Our Strength, August 17

The A Tasteful Pursuit dinner, at Masa’s includes a five-course dinner with wine pairing. Executive Chef Gregory Short will be manning the kitchen, along with special guest chefs, including Chef/Partner Mark Dommen of One Market; Executive Chef Xavier Salomon of The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, and Executive Pastry Chef William Werner of Quince. Tickets are $150, including tax, gratuity and wine pairings. For tickets and information, call Andrea Agalloco at Share Our Strength at 888-273-6141 or purchase tickets online. Share Our Strength’s goal is to end childhood hunger in America.
