Moon sand is frequently advertised on TV, mostly on children's stations. The commercials make it look like so much fun! "Moon sand is the moldable, holdable sand that never dries out!" is what the commercials loudly pronounce. Santa delivered two small moon sand containers to my youngest children. Unfortunately, Santa didn't really consider the mess that was about to invade my house.

My son and I decided to try the moon sand yesterday. It doesn't really mold as well as it appears to in the commercials. For some reason I thought that it would be more containable, more moldable, like playdough. But it isn't. It is real sand that happens to stick together a little bit like wet sand does. With just the one small tub of sand, we weren't sure what to do with the sand. So the sand slowly crept onto our playroom carpet, all over my son's clothes and hands and was not easy to get off our plastic table. We played with the green sand and we still have green sand on the carpet even after vacuuming once.

If you do choose to play with moon sand, it might be better to buy the whole kit with the sandcastle and the molds. The kit also comes with a bin that hopefully contains the sand in once place. But I am still skeptical. The whole experience was more stressful than fun for me. It only lasted about 10 minutes for my four year old son and then he was done. I get more mileage, fun and less stress with playdough. However, it is always good to try new things and you never know what is going to the “best” new toy that holds your child’s attention for longer than 10 minutes!
