With Obama elected last night, at our breakfast table this morning we talked about the new lives of Obama’s two daughters, ages seven and ten. Identifying with the lives of the two new first children was a great way for us to talk about the election and the history that was made yesterday.

What do you think a play date is like at the White House? Can they have a sleepover? What would it be like to sleep at the White House? Do you get picked up in a limousine at school? Does the Secret Service have to do a background check on your family for you to come over for a play date? What is it like to have a Secret Service person with you all the time? Do they have the same toys that we do? Is it fun to have someone else besides your parents cook your meals? What is it like to live in such a big house? The lives of Obama’s daughters are about to drastically change and we could only wonder what they might be feeling today.

My children think it all sounds so glamorous. My daughter said they were so lucky to have their picture in the newspaper and to get to live in the White House. When I told them that the Obama girls were getting a new puppy, there were chants of “They are so lucky.” We then had the conversation that yes, they will have lots of things that we don’t have, but the reality is that it is a very different life, one that not many have experienced.

When I was young, Amy Carter was in the White House. It was always interesting to hear about what she was doing, where she was going and tidbits about her daily life. Although information about the first family and their lives may be limited, I am sure my children will enjoy hearing anything that they can. Learning about the lives of the first children is one way that all children can relate to the presidency, learn about politics, enjoy the benefits of living in this great city and be a part of history.
