The Institute of Ecolonomics reports on its website it is working with Mountain Sky Group, a Colorado based developer, on a comprehensive project that will demonstrate the level of environmentally responsible construction that is economicallly viable across a range of residential construction.
IOE was founded by former actor and environmental activist, Dennis Weaver and is based in Loveland, CO. Weaver, co-star of the 1960s’ TV show “Gunsmoke” and star of the 1970s’ hit “McCloud,” took on another role in the 1990s when he began advocating for environmentally friendly home construction and lived in a house made of recycled earth-filled tires in Ridgeway, Colo.
Weaver coined the term “ecolonomics” - a blending of ecology and economics - and founded the Institute of Ecolonomics on the campus of Missouri Southern State University in Joplin in 1993. After Weaver died of cancer in 2006, a change in leadership in the Institute led to a move from Missouri to Northern Colorado. An anonymous donor provided an 80-acre estate southwest of Loveland to help carry on Weaver’s vision of funding projects that benefit the environment yet can still turn a profit.
The developments being considered for this project include 3 master planned developments ranging from an entry level development, an urban project and a community of nine custom homes.
The affordable entry level homes are a master planned development in Fort Lupton, CO. They will be a mix of single family detached homes with a price point near $200,000 and single-family attached homes with a price point near $150,000.
