People of Earth: For a current end-o-the world threat, you can check in with Nibiru central and Nancy Leider, a self described psychic emissary for the aliens beings of Zeta Reticuli, called Zetas, here on ZetaTalk. Nibiru itself is a hypothetical planet proposed by Zecharia Sitchin beginning in the 1970s and since commandeered by followers of Mayan based prophecy to be tied in with the imminent end of the world in 2012 -- and perhaps generate considerable profit in web based advertising and books in the meantime. NASA is trying to calm the pseudo-hysteria:

More pointedly, NASA has this week launched a campaign of information designed to squash mounting rumours that suggest it is covering up the existence of 'Nibiru', a planet on a collision course with Earth that will destroy our little blue and green marble in – yes, you guessed it – 2012. There is no factual basis for these claims,” outlined NASA in an official question-and-answer session conducted through its Web site. Obviously [the proffered planet] does not exist.”

By 'does not exist' astronomers mean there is no sign of an unknown gas giant planet this side of Epsilon Eridani, over a comfortable ten light years away. Nothing in telescopes, no Jupiter-like radio signals crackling and buzzing in the dish of radio-telescopes. Despite hordes of amatuer comet hunters looking for the next Shoemaker-Levy 9, there have been no images of nearby, mysterious objects or infrared emitters. It's certainly possible a large, trans-Plutonian world exists far out in the dim reaches of the Kuiper Belt or the Oort Cloud. If so, sooner or later it will be detected.

But anything that crosses or comes near the orbit of earth, as Nibiru is said to do periodically, and is due for a close pass or collision in the next few years would, presumably, be inside the orbit of at least Saturn or Uranus by now. Such an object would be easily seen by any of the thousands f medium sized amateur telescopes probing the heavens and probably visible to the unaided eye of a sharp sighted observer. Its gravitational effect on dozens of comets, asteroids, moons, or planets would be glaring, So relax, earthlings, we may make it past 2012 yet.
