After the deluge of news stories about Michael Jackson due to his untimely death and more coverage to come with his memorial today at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, including the presence of the mega-star's body, some people may feel enough is enough. The MJ-overloaded say they know all about Michael Jackson and need nothing more. Grumblings of King of Pop overdose are understandable, but with demands for all things MJ up, fans of all ages still weeping , and media outlets knowing that Jackson draws a crowd, get ready for more, and this includes books.
Examiners from different parts of the country have already listed books about Michael Jackson and reported on the demand for more on the star:
An article at Publishers Weekly suggests the public is not clamoring for books on Jackson nearly as much as it clamors for his music, which is unsurprising. After writing that books about Jackson, as of June 29, were not selling as well as his mucic, and telling readers that books by the icon himself are out of print, writer Rachel Deahl finishes:
While it's currently unclear whether the dearth of titles in print about Jackson will inspire U.S. publishers to sign up new works--Macmillan UK has ordered a major reprint on one if its backlist Jackson bios and a Montreal publisher is rushing its Jackson book--Da Capo has a suddenly-more-timely title on its hands with a recently acquired book by Nelson George about Jackson's bestselling album. George's Thriller, which is slated for spring 2010, will deconstruct the bestselling album in history as well as focus on Jackson's career arc and, now, his death. (PW)
A June 30 Publishers Weekly article reports that a "handful of houses are rushing, or signing, books about Michael Jackson."
A day later, Deahl posted another story at PW saying that publisher Grand Central has acquired the rights to the out-of-print 1990 biography Michael Jackson: The Magic and the Madness by J. Randy Taraborrelli, the same book mentioned by the LA Literature Examiner. The book will be updated, and its new title will be Michael Jackson: The Magic, The Madness, The Whole Story, 1958-2009. It may be released as early as next week.
