People who read and love Toni Morrison's novels were not surprised in 1993 when the world recognized her talent, and she won the Nobel Prize in Literature. She is the first African-American author to receive the prestigious honor. Her fans said, "It's about time," and Morrison continues to be an astonishing voice in the literary world.

Birth Name: Chloe Anthony Wofford

Birthday: February 18, 1931

Birthplace: Lorraine, Ohio

Education and Career: "Humanities at Howard and Cornell Universities, followed by an academic career at Texas Southern University, Howard University, Yale, and since 1989, a chair at Princeton University." In 1965, she left academia for a while to work as an editor at Random House.

Morrison has also written children's books with her son, Slade, such as Big Box, The (Jump at the Sun) and another title, Little Cloud and Lady Wind, to be released in 2010. In addition, she has written essays, been the editor of multiple nonfiction books, such as the newly-released Burn this Book, writers on censorship, and has given her attention to literary criticism with books such as Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination.
