We have 8 Dems and 5 Repubs in the state, and my prediction is that, if and when the Pelosi bill comes to the House floor, the delegation will narrowly approve it, 7 to 6. All 5 Repubs will oppose, as well as one of our 2 Blue Dog Dems, Wilmington-area moderate Mike McIntyre and Asheville-area Heath Schuler, But it's coming down to the wire, the debate is hot, and our state could swing to a nea vote.
This is the same legislation The Wall Street Journal called the worst bill ever. The main problem with the bill is that it establishes massive and intrusive bureaucracy in the name of covering the uninsured, at a cost we cannot afford.
On the whole it would seem our reps are not in line with the will of the people, if the September Rasmussen poll in North Carolina is to be be believed..
Here are just some of the questions asked by Rasmussen, and the responses, of North Carolina voters:
"Generally speaking, do you strongly favor, somewhat favor, somewhat oppose or strongly oppose the health care reform plan proposed by President Obama and the congressional Democrats?"
30% Strongly favor
14% Somewhat favor
7% Somewhat oppose
46% Strongly oppose
3% Not sure
"If the health care reform plan passes, will the quality of health care get better, worse, or stay about the same?"
27% Better
51% Worse
14% Staying the same
8% Not sure
"If the health care reform plan passes, will the cost of health care go up, go down, or stay about the same?"
47% Cost of health care will go up
19% Cost will go down
25% Stay the same
8% Not sure
"Is the health care reform legislation being considered by Congress likely to increase the deficit, reduce the deficit, or have no impact on the deficit?"
64% Increase the deficit
11% Reduce the deficit
17% No impact on the deficit
8% Not sure
While the state delegation may end up narrowly approving or disapproving the bill, we here in the Triangle will be solidly represented by Pelosi supporters Rep. Bob Etheridge, Rep. David Price, and Rep. Brad Miller. If one of these 3 votes against the bill it will be a brand new day. But that's what we need. The era of government trying to solve everyone's problems must end at some point.
