It is important to review basic math concepts during the summer months to make sure your child doesn't lose the skills he or she developed during the school year. You could get a workbook and have your child do a few pages of math each day, but not all children think that workbook pages are fun. If your child doesn't like doing worksheets, why not take your math review outdoors?

Almost any outdoor game can be altered to include math. Here's an example that uses water balloons.

"I have four water balloons. You have one. How many do we have all together? Five? Good job!

Oh, you threw your balloon and it popped! We had five balloons and took one away. How many are left? That's right! Five minus one is four!"

Other math review games that you can do outside include:

  • Dividing pebbles into five or ten groups.
  • Finding circles, squares and other shapes in the yard. (Look at the tire. What shape is that?)
  • Counting flowers.
  • Measuring the distance he or she tosses a ball

Do you have any math review games you play outdoors?
