Regina Benjamin, President Obama's choice for Surgeon General, is more than just another doctor. Benjamin has worked to reform health care on both a national and a local level. According to US News, she has turned her small clinic into a non-profit clinic so she can treat uninsured patients who can only afford to pay her in seafood or with their thanks. At the same time, she is traveling around the world to talk about the challenges small practices and uninsured people face and to encourage change.

For educators and parents, the most exciting news just may be Benjamin's focus on education's role in better health care. She feels that people who are well educated will be more likely to land a job with health benefits and will know which choices are healthier.

With President Barack Obama, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Surgeon General Regina Benjamin all focused on education reform, will Maryland students develop the math and science skills they will need if they are going to compete effectively in the global marketplace? Only time will tell.
