We stopped by the Fire Museum of Maryland the other day for a child's birthday party. I was pretty surprised that someone chose that location, since I couldn't imagine a lot of exciting things to do there. Well, I was wrong.

The Fire Museum has a discovery room where kids can play on a real fire engine and ring its very, very loud bell. There are also several models of a fire engine for them to play on and a whole row of little firemen's coats and helmets for them to wear. The parents had a tough time convincing their kids that it was time to leave after several hours of play.

Older children will enjoy simply wandering around the museum and looking at the different displays. I walked around with an older child, pointing out all of the differences over the years, like the fact that the oldest engines were actually horse drawn. However, he was more interested in the fire axes and the collection of bells.

This little museum would be a great place to go during a transportation unit or could be a nice way to follow up a lesson on safety.
