Lighting Learning Tip - First grade math help
Some first graders quickly understand the difference between addition and subtraction and can easily master basic facts math drills. Others struggle for hours with a simple homework page. If your child needs first grade math help, you can try a few simple tricks:
-
Make up a silly rhyme about the plus and minus signs. For example, you could try, "Plus means more and minus means less. If I mix them up, I've got a mess!"
-
Pull out pennies or small candies and have your child use them to work out the problems.
-
Make up stories to go along with the problems. "I had ten candies. Then, James ran in and grabbed six of them. Now, how many candies do I have?"
-
Ask the teacher if there are any parent training programs. Some Cecil County schools have free parent nights where they teach parents how to help their children with math and reading homework.
