Make paper pizzas to make learning fractions fun.

Teaching your child how to count? Trying to discuss fraction basics with your preschooler? For most children, math manipulatives can make learning math concepts much easier. However, they can be quite costly. You can make your own tools to teach kids basic math for pennies.

If your children are preschool age or older, you can even turn the project into a cross curriculum lesson by having them help make their learning tools. When they decorate those manipulatives, they're doing the day's art project!

One simple manipulative we had fun making was a series of fraction pizza pies. We used red paper plates, brown circles and white strips tomake cheese pizzas with pepperoni on them. After the "pizzas" dried, we cut them into different fraction amounts. One we cut in half, one in quarters, one in thirds, etc. Then, the kids practiced their fractions.

Fun, easy and almost free! (The plates were about 19 cents because I picked them up after Valentine's Day on clearance.)
