This tip is short and sweet. Use hobbies to encourage a reluctant learner. Your child likes skateboarding? Look for ways to pull skateboarding into the curriculum. It doesn't have to be elaborate or planned out.

An example of how to incorporate skateboarding into several subjects:

  • Tell that reluctant reader to read and summarize an article in the new skating mag that just came in the mail.
  • Discuss the friendly letter format and have your skateboard loving child write a fan letter to Tony Hawk.
  • Mention that Christmas is coming up and announce the amount of money you will be spending on skateboarding gear. Hand over some sale ads and catalogs and encourage your child to come up with a list of items that is as close to the gift amount budget as possible. Then, have your child figure tax and shipping charges for the total.
