As many parents search for new ways to be involved in community projects, both in a response to President Obama's Call to Serve and through empathy that is often created during difficult economic times, there are many organizations across our region who offer volunteerism opportunity.
One important aspect to consider before offering your time or money to an organization is to check their background, annual report and even Better Business Bureau to be sure that you are working with a reputable company who has a high frequency of return back into the community. AmeriCorps is one such organization that has built a reliable reputation across the nation, and locally, you can find them doing work with Habitat for Humanity as well as many literacy programs.
Created in response to President Clinton’s 1993 National and Community Service Trust Act, President Bush’s 1990 National Service Act formerly launched AmeriCorps, a network of domestic service programs that engage Americans in community service.
AmeriCorps concentrates on service areas such as public safety, education, health and environment.
In addition to corporate and group opportunities, AmeriCorps offers programs for individuals, as well. Although children under 17 years old cannot volunteer individually, parents and older children can select from State and National, Vista and NCCC programs using their
interactive selector, which helps individuals determine which program is right for them.
National AmeriCorps Week is May 9-16, 2009. Now would be a great time to get the family involved by devising a project plan.
Service in AmeriCorps can be a great opportunity for a college-bound child, as the program offers some tuition towards college and sometimes requires relocation.
