Who's knocking on your door?
The buzz around town (if not the nation) is that the Inauguration of President Obama on Tuesday not only marks a unique and exciting day in American History, but it also seems to have united Americans in a warm “can do” spirit. To wit, President Obama and his new administration have enacted a
“call to serve” for all Americans to take responsibility for our country. After all, our forefathers rolled up their sleeves to pen our rights, and the blood of thousands has been spilt across the centuries to ensure America’s growth, prosperity, freedom and greatness.
Obama’s call is a reminder that while we also honor those in the military and public service who are serving on the front lines, Americans at home also must serve. Seriously, how hypocritical would we be to work tirelessly to “elect” change but assume that’ll do it?
President Obama cannot single-handedly change “anything” nor America. That is, as he notes on the
White House website, the burden of all Americans to share. Breaking it down: we need to use actions, not just words. Moving forward from the clamour started with Obama’s nomination to the presidency means making some “real noise.”
No, I am not some hyper-radical patriot, but even I have a new nationalist kick in my step as surely America’s “big britches” must have gained just a little more respect from those who deem America, by elite political representation, full of rich, hot air. Less than 1% of Americans live the way many politicians “think,” and it’s overdue to elect a grassroots-born, visionary who believes that cultural anthropology, volunteerism and education are the mechanism to bring real success, sustainable economy, true homeland security and if not world peace, perhaps a little more peace on our streets.
I have waited years to be able to move beyond the “fluff” and share with you the type of knowledge-sharing that excites me, and I thank those of you who are following me from the Mom & Dad Examiner, Potomac News & Messenger and various NGOs. I hope that you too are motivated by what you read in the coming months, as I share in my new capacity as Family Activism Examiner ways that parents, families and children can serve, volunteer and be active in this exciting era of change.
Fondly,
Shannyn Snyder
