Fall is such a terrific time to take pictures of the family. No, not the “how could the photographer have forgotten to brush her hair or wipe her nose” school photos, but those fun, candid photos that are the kids in action – fresh air and fresh faces!

Taking quality photos is now more possible than ever. Digital cameras make it easy to take dozens of shots and sort the ones you like without wasting precious film and printing expenses, and many digital cameras offer unique effects like night shooting, landscape scenery and even thematic borders.

Playing with light and shadows, varying the time of day or even trying trick photography can be fun for both you and the kids. Take a stab at Photoshop or PhotoImpact and add a frame or even cut out your image and place it in a graphic. Building a blog is a great way to “scrapbook” online and much less time consuming than traditional scrapbooking for those of us who buy the supplies but still haven’t finished the baby book (for our 12-year olds).

My favorite photographer, Amanda Elkins of Camarillo, California, who travels twice a year to the D.C. area, takes fantastic, natural non-studio photos of kids and families and she loves to work with sharp lenses and sunshine. Amanda says her secret weapon is daylight and it seems to radiate through all of her photos. Those who work with Amanda say that her true secret is how comfortable it is to worth with her and the way she manages to get children to “act like kids” around her means photos will have meaning.

Fall colors make a natural backdrop and without much effort or experience, you can capture children jumping in leaves, walking in a pumpkin patch or running about in their Halloween costumes. Let the natural colors of the season work for you.

So, get out and get inspired, let the kids jump or play and start snapping away! Let the kids get in on the fun with Tricky Pix, a camera-included how-to book for taking funny photos.
