What am I supposed to get?  Sarah Lipoff

The other day I posted an article and had spent a lot of time spell checking it, editing, and checking it again.  I was pretty proud of the information, and was also excited about finding something new to try – Stroller Strides (I will let you know how it goes).  Anyway, I later learned through a comment from a reader that I had made a spelling error.  Oh, the embarrassment.

I don’t know about you, but I forget things a lot, and find that I have problems in general keeping my mind focused.  I think I get enough sleep during the night, although disjointed due to the wee one, and am still breastfeeding but trying to eat enough.  Still, my brain just isn’t functioning the way it used to.

When I started letting people know I was pregnant, a mom at the school I was teaching at told me it took her about 2 years before her brain was right again.  I laughed along with her, but inside I was freaking out.  My mind is pretty important to me, and I think I have always been really good at remembering directions, memorizing amazing facts, and retaining information quickly.  The idea of being constantly forgetful was a bit overwhelming.

5 months after the birth of my baby, I can barely remember where I am going when I get in the car.  I try to make lists, but find I have to simply enjoy the moments when I am standing in the middle of an isle in a store completely unsure of what I was there for in the first place.  One day, it will all come back to me.

The thing is, it isn’t entirely all my fault.  There is actually a bit of science behind all this.  I did some research and I am not the only one suffering from constant utter forgetfulness.  In fact, there is even a fun name for my ailment– “momnesia.”  Don’t believe me?  MSNBC did a story about it:

Don’t care for MSNBC?  Time did a story on it too:

If you don’t feel like reading all the gobbledygook about what is going on, essentially the articles tell us that after pregnancy, you are sleep deprived, running on little fuel, and multi-tasking like no ones’ business.  This can help the brain work better in some ways, but make it overwhelmed in others.  Add in all those hormones running crazy all over the place, and when you think about it, it’s amazing new moms are able to do simple math.

So, don’t be so hard on yourself the next time you can’t remember your phone number, or what year it is.  Remember you have a lot of things going on right now and the most important thing is making that wonderful special bond with your new baby.  That is something that will last a lifetime, and your wee one doesn’t care right now if you know how to spell right or not.
