The Reds didn't score a single run on Thursday. A single run was all the Braves needed, but they put up seven, just to be safe.
The Reds only managed five hits in their series finale against Atlanta and failed to make it a three-game sweep. With the loss, the Reds fall to 33-32.
The Reds have had trouble scoring runs all season. The team batting average is a meager .195 in the its last 14 games and they have been even worse with runners in scoring position.
While every player has been underachieving at the plate, the biggest culprit has to be Willy Taveras, who went 0-5 with two strikeouts on Thursday, one with the bases loaded. Taveras has one hit in his last 45 at-bats. Why is he still playing everyday?
It wouldn't be fair, however, to blame Taveras too much. The entire team seems unable to get any hits or score any runs, despite getting several opportunities. The pitching staff has done a tremendous job in carrying the load, but it's only a matter of time before they start to drop off, and it looks like it may be starting to happen. With so little room for error, the Reds pitchers have to be getting close to burnout.
If Joey Votto ever returns to the lineup, it should give the offense a little boost, but there is still a lot of improvement needed if the Reds expect to stay above .500 much longer.
