George Clooney and Ewan McGregor star in a hard to believe true story, about a reporter (McGregor) who crosses paths with an ex-soldier (Clooney) that used to be part of a secret military regiment whose sole purpose was to develop psychic abilities in soldiers.
In short, this film is disappointing. If you were like me, you saw some of the previews for The Men Who Stare at Goats and thought, this film has the potential to be a bizarre quirky comedy with a strong cast to carry it. And if you are like me after you watch this film, you will realize how wrong you were. While the previews made the film seem semi-clever and funny, the actual film is not. The jokes are at times predictable, and often cheap. For instance, McGregor’s character reacts to a story about an innocent goat being killed with the line, "(it’s) Silence of the Goats.” These groaners are laden throughout the film. Even using McGregor in a film that is about the military training their own “Jedis” is a little too contrived for me.
The Men Who Stare at Goats has its moments. Clooney is solid throughout the film, but the script unfortunately, does not give him much to work with. The film tries to blend its comedy edge with retrospective moments of clarity or war time tragedies, but the dichotomy of emotions never truly meets in the middle.
Bottom Line: Wanted the film to be funnier, but was let down. Might be worth seeing to quench your curiosity, but ultimately, the film is a slightly true story that is only dulled by a sort of funny script and a not-so-entertaining storyteller.
