Five days before the UK broadcast of The Waters of Mars, Doctor Who Magazine #415 has published some details on the story:
*The events take place on 21 November, 2059, on the historical date of Mars Bowie Base One's destruction.
*Co-writer Phil Ford noted on the day the production team began discussion on the episode NASA announced the discovery of water traces on Mars.
*Ford also states: "I did four drafts before Russell took it over and I'll be honest, my jaw dropped when I saw how he developed things - but it became so dark it was brilliant."
*Russell T Davies confirms there will be no Ice Warriors in the special, but the race (onscreen enemies and at time allies of the Second and Third Doctors) may be mentioned.
*Bowie Base One is so accurate in its design the production team researched the bolt types NASA use.
*The monsters in the story had to be toned down after a few days of filming in fear of frightening children too much.
*Gadget, the robot featured in the special, is expected to resonate well with fans and be remembered along with earlier robot allies of the Doctor such as K-9 and Kamelion (a little seen companion of the Fifth Doctor).
*Davies states Tennant's performance in the story is 'his most extraordinary performance yet.'
And finally, a quote from the Doctor published in the issue: "I think certain moments in time are fixed. Tiny, precious moments. Everything else is in flux, anything can happen, but those certain moments, they have to stand." A truncated form of this quote appears in one of the episode's trailers, but interestingly omits the Doctor's words "I think." Perhaps there is some hope in the Doctor's final days of gloom and doom.
