The Rochester Knighthawks announced that the team has acquired goalie Aaron Bold, defenseman Ian Rubel and the rights to defenseman Cody Johnson from the Minnesota Swarm. The Knighthawks, in turn, sent 2009 draft pick Ryan Hoff and their second-round pick in the 2011 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft to the Swarm. The three players join a Knighthawks team that opens its 2010 season on Jan. 9 against the Buffalo Bandits at 8:05 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester War Memorial.

The Knighthawks will also make history on Jan. 9 as they broadcast their season opener against the Bandits on 94.1 The Zone (WZNE). It will mark the first time the team will broadcast a game on a commercial FM radio station.

The Buffalo Sabres are offering an affordable family night out when the Portland Pirates take on the Rochester Americans in a regular season game at HSBC Arena at 7 p.m. Nov. 12. This will be the first meeting between Portland and Rochester since Buffalo’s affiliation change last season.

Family Packs cost $79.50 and include four 100 Level III tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas and one bag of popcorn. For more information or to order, call 1-888-Go-Sabres or log on to www.sabres.com.

The Canisius College men’s basketball team will officially begin the 2009-10 season today (Oct. 16) when head coach Tom Parrotta and his Golden Griffins hit the practice floor from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Koessler Athletic Center. As per team policy, all practice sessions are open to the public.

The Griffs open their 106th season on Nov. 17 when the team travels to face Loyola (Chicago). The 2009-10 home opener will take place on Nov. 28 when the Blue and Gold hosts Howard at 3:15 p.m. as the back half of a doubleheader with the Canisius women’s team. Canisius returns four starters and nine letter winners to this year’s roster.

Season tickets for the combined men and women’s 26-home game schedule are currently on sale through the Koessler Athletic Center ticket office. Reserved seats are $140 for the general public and $100 for Canisius faculty, staff and administration. General admission season tickets cost just $75. For more information, call the ticket office at 888-2885 or visit GoGriffs.com.

My prediction for Sunday? It may be getting colder in WNY, but Dick Jauron continues to feel the heat after a 31-10 blowout loss to the Jets.
